John is a chartered town planner and a member of the Institute of Economic Development. His early career (until 34) was spent in local authority working predominantly on industrial policy and in economic development. In 1986 he joined Bridgewater Estates plc part of the Peel Holdings Group as Managing Director. Following the 1990 property downturn Peel reorganised its structure from 9 companies down to 2. I was appointed MD of the largest section of the Group, Peel Investments North, the largest property company in the UK outside London.
In late 1991 John progressed to Birse plc (Property, construction & housing) now part of Balfour Beatty where he served as a Main Board director until 2003, responsible for property and housing. Throughout his time at Birse he also had an interest in a major landfill and waste management business in Avondale Scotland. He remains a director and shareholder of Avondale which is heavily involved in waste reuse, recycling, disposal and energy from waste.
In addition, John has performed various non-executive director roles in the NHS, construction and housing businesses.
